AKHA Moves to include Ikono-uyo in Uyo Capital City Development Master plan

Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly on Friday took steps to amend the Law and Masterplan of Uyo Capital City Development Authority for the full inclusion of all parts of Ikono Uyo clan in order to help villages and communities in the clan avail developmental benefits meant for them.

Rt. Hon Udeme Otong, Speaker, AKHA

This was part of the resolution sort by the  Member Representing Uyo State Constituency, Hon Uwemedimo Dianabasi Asuquo in a motion titled: A Call To Fully Integrate Ikono Uyo Clan In Uyo Capital City Development Master Plan" during plenary.

Hon Asuquo who moved the motion recalled that the establishment of the Uyo Capital City Development Authority (UCCDA) immediately after the creation of the State over thirty years ago, was for the specific mandate to manage and regulate urban land and development within the state capital and its environs.

He said he was worried that some villages and communities in Ikono Uyo clan were not captured in the master plan of Uyo Capital City Development Authority.

He stressed that the exclusion has denied the villages and Communities some benefits and discourage prospective investors and developers from investing in the area.

"Out of the over 19 villages and communities in Ikono Uyo clan, greater number of these villages and communities is not captured in the master plan of Uyo Capital City Development Authority.

"Discouraged prospective investors and developers once their independent search returns and indicates that areas in this clan are not in Uyo Capital City Development Master plan".

" Cause little of no development of good access roads network, lack of basic social amenities & other infrastructures to the extent that some communities like Anan Ikono, Ikot Ayan Ikono, Ikot Ebo Ikono can only be accessed through neighboring Local Government Areas of Etinan".

"Deprive communities and villages in Ikono Uyo Clan which is a subset of Uyo LGA of all the benefits availed by the Capital City Development Authority".

Hon Asuquo urged Akwa Ibom State Government to direct relevant intervention agencies to intervene by providing access roads and other needed infrastructures in Ikono Uyo clan and also embark on remedial works on failed portions of roads leading to Ikono Uyo clan.

Ruling on the motion, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon Udeme Otong who presided over the plenary referred the matter to a joint committee of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and committee on Lands, Housing & Urban Renewal to report back within two weeks.
