Otobong Bob during Tuesday's plenary |
The member representing Nsit Ubium State Constituency who doubles as the Deputy Leader of the 8th Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. (Barr) Otobong Bob has raised concern over the rising number of illegal motor parks in Uyo metropolis, which contribute to traffic congestion, disorderliness, and unsafe conditions on major roads and public space.
He made this known on Tuesday at plenary of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly in a motion titled; Urgent motion on curbing illegal motor parks and revamping government owned parks in Uyo metropolis. In his motion, which was overwhelmingly supported by majority of the state lawmakers, Bob decried the significant threat posed by these illegal operations to the urban transport system which undermine government revenue, and compromise public safety.
He further observed that Government-owned motor parks in Uyo metropolis are underutilized or in deplorable conditions, encouraging the proliferation of these illegal alternatives while urging that a well-organized transportation system is crucial for economic growth, public convenience, and the overall development of Akwa Ibom State.
To address this issue, the House adopted all the prayers of the motion resolving to:
1. Call on the Akwa Ibom State Government to prioritize the renovation and modernization of government-owned motor parks in Uyo metropolis, equipping them with modern facilities and technology.
2. Enforce Laws Against Illegal Motor Parks: Mandate relevant agencies, including the Ministry of Transportation and the Uyo Capital City Development Authority (UCCDA), to enforce existing laws against illegal motor parks and ensure their immediate closure.
3. Foster partnerships between the government and private sector to manage and maintain motor parks, ensuring sustainability and improved service delivery.
The Rt. Honourable Speaker Udeme Otong directed the clerk of the house Mrs. NsikakAbasi Orok to communicate the House resolutions to His Excellency the Governor.
Similarly, Bob also provided the general principles on the amended public and political office holders remuneration law, cap. 117 Laws of Akwa Ibom State 2022 stating that the executive bill sent to the Assembly by the Governor seeks to accommodate these class of public servants in the new minimum wage structure. The bill which received accelerated hearing due to its prominence and expediency was passed and the Speaker adjourned plenary to Tuesday 18th February 2025.
