...KICKS OFF PHASE II EXPANSION
Oyigbo, Rivers State, 26th Feb. 2025 - In a major stride toward regional development, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has officially commissioned the newly reconstructed Oyigbo Road Network, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable infrastructure and economic growth. The project, spearheaded by Sir Victor Antai, KJW, Executive Director, Projects, NDDC, is a significant upgrade designed to enhance connectivity and boost commercial activities in the region.
The 7.3-kilometer road, covering Obunku, Umuosi, Obeakpu, Mgboji, and Ndoki communities in Oyigbo Local Government Area, was reconstructed to address long-standing transportation challenges that had rendered the route almost impassable. Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Antai recalled the dire state of the road before NDDC's intervention.
"At some point, this road was so inaccessible that people had to park their vehicles in Afam and continue their journey on foot. Even four-wheel-drive vehicles struggled to navigate the terrain, highlighting the urgency of our intervention," he stated.
The project, executed by Messrs Broad Height Limited, features a 7.3-meter-wide asphalt-paved carriageway, 2.674 kilometers of reinforced concrete drainage, and 11 meters of reinforced concrete culverts, including the extension and rehabilitation of existing structures.
Antai emphasized the economic and social impact of the road, highlighting how it has improved the socio-economic standard of the Ndoki people and neighboring communities. With a smooth and accessible link between Afam Ndoki and Port Harcourt City, the road is expected to reduce travel time, encourage suburban expansion, and facilitate trade and investment.
Beyond its economic significance, Antai pointed out the security implications of the reconstruction, noting that the previously poor condition of the road had made it a hotspot for criminal activities.
"The reconstruction of this road has mitigated security threats, ensuring safer movement for residents and businesses," he affirmed.
Building on the success of this project, Antai announced the commencement of Phase II, which will extend the road from Afam in Oyigbo LGA to Akwete in Ukwa East LGA, Abia State, and further to Etim Ekpo LGA in Akwa Ibom State.
Describing this expansion as a bold step toward regional integration and economic growth, Antai stated:
"This road will serve as a vital link between three neighboring states, unlocking immense socio-economic benefits for our people."
The next phase of the project is expected to:
✅ Boost trade and investment, particularly by improving access to Oyigbo Market, the largest in the Ndoki cultural region.
✅ Enhance agricultural and industrial development by providing farmers and businesses with easier access to markets.
✅ Improve transportation by reducing travel distances and cutting costs.
✅ Strengthen security and promote peaceful coexistence between communities.
As he flagged off Phase II, Antai called on government agencies, contractors, and community leaders to collaborate in ensuring the project's timely and successful completion.
"This road is not just an infrastructure project; it is a pathway to growth, opportunity, and prosperity for our people," he declared.
Reaffirming NDDC’s commitment to its guiding principle of "Making a Difference," Antai assured the people that the Commission remains dedicated to delivering impactful projects that transform lives and drive sustainable development in the Niger Delta region.
