AKHA Holds Public Hearing on Establishment of University of Education

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly committee on Education has concluded a one-day public hearing on a Bill for a law to provide for the establishment of the Akwa Ibom State University of Education Afaha Nsit and to Make Provisions for its Administration and for other purposes connected.

Chaired by the member representing Oron/Udung Uko state Constituency, Hon (Chief) Kenim Onofiok, the bill seeks to establish a University of Education that will provide high-quality teacher education programs.

The one day public hearing which took place at old chapel of the state House of Assembly on Wednesday 26, February 2025 had stakeholders giving their support to the bill.

Declaring to event open, the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Udeme Otong represented by the Deputy Leader of the House, Rt. Hon Otobong Bob, said the bill was one of the commitment of the 8th legislative Assembly in providing legislative ambience towards driving a positive change in education sector.

"This bill indicates the commitment of the 8th legislative Akwa Ibom Legislative Assembly in providing legislative ambience to drive home positive change in the sector. This bill is more on qualitative and quantitative education".

While thanking the committee and stakeholders for contributing to the public hearing, he noted that the bill will encourage the advancement of learning and will be an apex for moulding teachers who would be able to compete nationally and internationally.

In her address, the Chairman of the Committee, Hon (Chief) Kenim Onofiok said her committee was determined to pass a bill that will establish a university that will be a model for excellence.

"This committee is committed to ensuring that the bill is thoroughly scrutinized and that the views of all stakeholders are taken into account. We are determined to pass a law that will establish a university of education that will be a model for excellence in the educational sector".

Acknowledging the importance of the university, she said the committee has reviewed the bill and has identified several key areas of concern.

"This bill seeks to establish a University of Education that will provide high-quality teacher education programs, designed to produce teachers who are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to provide effective education to our people.

"As a committee, we have carefully reviewed the bill and have identified several key areas that require our attention. These include the transitional provisions, composition of councils, funding and staffing. We believe that these areas are critical to the success of the University and must be carefully considered if we are to achieve our goals"

She assured stakeholders and the public that the committee was committed to ensuring that the bill was thoroughly scrutinized and views of all stakeholders were taken into account.

On his part, the Provost of the College of Education, Afaha Nsit, Prof. Daniel Udo, said the university will provide more productive engagement opportunities for the college staff, who are mostly PhD holders and others who are undergoing various developmental training supported by Tetfund.

He also noted that the existing physical facilities and infrastructures would be maximally and efficiently utilized for teachers training by the university of education.
