Akwa Ibom State Assembly Amends Local Government Administration Law

Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has passed a bill for the amendment of Local Government Administration Law to enhance an all inclusive governance at the local government level.

The bill, as passed by the parliament on Tuesday, sought to increase the number of Supervisors to not more than 11 and not less than 3 and Special Advisers not more 5 than in the Local Government.

The passage of the amendment followed its  third reading through a motion by the Deputy Leader of the House, Rt. Hon Otobong Bob and Seconded by Hon Udobia Friday Udo.

Presenting the bill, member representing Etim Ekpo/Ika State Constituency, Rt Hon Mfon Idung, said the amendment of the law will give room for an inclusive governance at local government level 

He said, according to the bill, more Supervisors and Special Advisers would be appointed from all the political wards in the Local Government Areas created by Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISEC).

For Section 49 the amendment read, “subject to approval by the Legislative Council, the Chairman shall appoint from outside the legislative Council, such number of Supervisors not less than three and not more than eleven to head the departments as may be created by him".

"Section 52, reads: “The number of such Advisers one of whom shall be a Legal Practitioner in charge of Legal Matters, shall not exceed five".

Speaking in support of the bill, member representing Mbo State Constituency, Rt Hon Effiong Johnson and his Mkpat Enin counterpart, Hon Aniefiok Imo-Ita said the amendment will promote harmony and Efficiency in local government administration.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Udeme Otong, further directed the Assembly Clerk, Mrs. NsikakAbasi Orok, to transmit the amended bill to the Executive for further actions.

In a related development, “A Bill for a Law to provide for the establishment of the Akwa Ibom State University of Education Afaha Nsit and to make provisions for its administration and for other purposes connected thereto and “A Bill for a Law to Provide for the Peaceful and Orderly Transfer of Executive Powers from one democratically elected Governor to another and other matters connected therewith were read the first and referred to the House Committee on Rules, Business, and Ethics for rescheduling.
