Members of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly led by Chairman, House Committee on Boundary, Hon Precious Selon (r) on inspection of affected communities


As part of its oversight functions, the House Committee on Boundary and Conflict Resolution of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has visited Ntak Ikot Akpan in Essien Udim Local Government Area to assess the level of damage caused by the Nigerian Air Force bomb attack after an invasion of hoodlums who had been attacking police formations in the state.

The visit was necessary after a motion moved by Member representing Essien Udim State Constituency, Hon. Prince Ukpong Akpabio II for the resettlement of Ntak Ikot Akpan airstrike victims in Essien Udim. The House had mandated its Committee on Boundary Matters to liase with the Office of the Deputy Governor and the State Emergency Management Agency and visit the affected community to ascertain the current condition of the victims in order to meet their immediate material needs with every resource at their disposal.

The Committee which was led by its Chairman and Member representing Urueffong Oruko, Mrs. Precious Selong, Wednesday 16th, 2023 thanked His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno for making Security part of his ARISE Agenda by creating Ministry of Internal Security and Waterways, hitherto stated its readiness to provide succor to the affected displaced persons from the bomb blast.



Hon. Selong while addressing Essien Udim people during a courtesy visit to the Chairman of Essien Udim Local Government Area, Hon. Anthony Luke, commended the Member representing Essien Udim State Constituency, Prince Ukpong Akpabio II, for his proactiveness and for drawing the attention of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly and the State Government to the plight of his constituents.



The lawmaker also commended the Essien Udim Council Chairman, Hon. Anthony Luke for his efforts at restoring peace to the area and thanked him for renovating the Essien Udim Police Command that was completely burnt down during the crisis.

The Committee members who were received by the Clan Head of Ukana West, His Highness, Okuku Sylvanus Ekanem and Clan head of Ntak Ikot Akpan, Obong John Eshiet learnt that the Nigerian Air Force bombed Ikot Akpan in February, 2021 when there was influx of criminals into the State through the communities in Essien Udim.

They added that the attack unleashed unprecedented violence on innocent people of the community, leaving some dead and a few others injured with properties destroyed.

In her response, the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Selong who sympathised with the victims, pledged the support of the State Government to come to their aid and restore peace in the community.

Responding, the Essien Udim Council Chairman, Hon. Anthony Luke, thanked the State government for coming to the aid of the community and commended the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly for the priority attention given to the Motion for the resettlement of the refugees.
