Monthly Sanitation: Govt frowns at low participation by citizens

The Akwa Ibom state Attorney General, Barr Uwemedimo Nwoko has condemned the attitude of some citizens of the state to the restriction of movement order by government during the monthly sanitation exercise.

Speaking with reporters at the end of July exercise where he had joined the chairman of Akwa Ibom Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA) Hon Prince Ikim and Commissioner for Environment and Petroleum Resources Rt Hon (Barr) Ekong Sampson on monitoring and evaluation of the exercise, Barr Nwoko described the attitude of some who shunned the exercise as a high display of impunity.

He particularly condemned the attitude of some traders at Akpan Andem market in Uyo who displayed their wares within the period that the sanitation exercise was ongoing saying  the time has come for strict sanctions against defaulters.
"These are the same people who talk about impunity by government officials from the presidency down to the state level but are also displaying worse act of impunity at their own level.
"We must work with law enforcement agencies to ensure strict compliance to the non restriction of movement order because the task of keeping our environment clean is a collective task"

Also speaking, the commissioner for Environment and Petroleum Resources Rt Hon Barr Ekong Sampson urged the people to identify with government effort towards a clean and safe environment.

He called on the people to consider the dangers of flooding while disposing their waste pointing out that, the flood situations in Uyo is caused mostly by blocked drainage which is as a result of human activities like dumping of waste in the gutters.
"The people must identify with government efforts towards a safe environment and avoid acts that can lead to flooding of our environment" he stated.

Hon Prince Ikim who led members of the State Executive council to some of the drainage spots at Itam, Ikot Ekpene road, Nkemba and Udo Udoma avenue, Udo umana by Akpan Andem market especially, which the gutters  had been filled with debris resulting from street trading, said one of the reasons he stopped street trading was because of dumping debris into the gutters.
Recall that for the last two weeks the Agency has been embarking on aggressive desilting of gutters with the first phase which has almost  rounded up at Liberty road by Ikot Ekpene road, through to the Nkemba trough down to the chamber by Abak road.
Ikim advised that people should desist from dumping debris into the gutters to allow for free flow of water as this blocked drainages are the reason we are experiencing flood in recent time.
