Establish Functional Offices in A'Ibom - Ekong Sampson Tasks IOCs

The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Environment and Petroleum Resources,  Rt. Hon. (Barr.) Ekong Sampson has charged International Oil Companies (IOCs) and contractors operating in Akwa Ibom to set up functional offices in the state on the need to improve on their efficiency and impact positively on the lives of the people in various host communities.

The commissioner gave the charge when he played host to the Public Affairs Manager of ExxonMobil Nigeria, Mr. Aniefiok Idiok, in his office in Uyo,  the state capital.

He emphasized that while the government is in support of the  establishment of functional offices in the state, it was also ready to provide the enabling environment for them to succeed in the course of their operations.

Barr.  Sampson also called on the International Oil Companies and contractors to respect their terms of agreement with host communities, adding that they should help to protect the rights of indigenes of the state. 

"Oil companies should respect their obligations to host communities and Akwa Ibom State, which form the hub their operation.

"IOCs must have their presence felt in the state and speed up the process of collaboration. The rights of citizens must be protected," he stressed.

Expressing the government’s readiness towards partnering with them in addressing a number of challenges affecting host communities, he reiterated state government’s resolve to provide security and maintain peace and tranquility, which form the basis for successful business operations.

Speaking earlier, the Public Affairs Manager of ExxonMobil, Mr. Aniefiok Idiok, congratulated Ekong Sampson on his appointment as Commissioner for Environment and Petroleum Resources, while stressing that it was of utmost  importance to embark on the familiarization visit to the ministry on the heels of its inauguration.

"We congratulate you on your appointment. We are here to familiarize with you and your ministry.  Our company will always collaborate and partner with the state government."

Mr. Idiok restated the company's resolve to partner with the Akwa Ibom State government in the course of its operations in the state.

He promised that the company will continue to work closely with its host communities in the state for the mutual benefits of the state and ExxonMobil.

Also present at the occasion were all the directors of the ministry.
