Akwa Ibom State Assembly Holds Public Hearing on 2025 Budget

Speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Udeme Otong declaring the public hearing open

Determined to promote transparency and accountability throughout the entire budgetary process, the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly committee on Appropriation and Finance organized a public hearing on the proposed 2025 budget to ensure that all critical stakeholders are involved as participants in the process.

While speaking at the commencement of the public hearing held at the old chapel of the Assembly on Monday, the Chairman of the Committee, Hon Itorobong Etim explained that the event would afford the Executive Arm opportunity to present its scorecard and also brief the people on progress so far.

"Today’s public hearing/briefing on the State 2025 Budget proposals shall afford the Executive arm the opportunity to present its score cards to the people and brief them on the journey so far on the Akwa Ibom project".

Etim further said that when coming up with the idea of public hearings, the focus was to ensure that government policy was driven by the public and their interests

"This forum feedbacks from the people on performance indices and the way forward for our Budget process, would be received. All these will engender good governance, accountability, and transparency in the financial the State"

"The main objective of the forum is to create full awareness of and also mobilize concerted actions on the 2025 Budget proposals of the state. It is equally aimed at providing the avenue where valuable inputs on the proposals are assembled and collated to enhance the overall socio-economic development of our State".

Declaring the public hearing open, the Speaker of the House, Rt Udeme Otong, said he was confident that the deliberation help strengthen the ARISE AGENDA of the present administration.

"I am confident that today's deliberation will take us several millage on the road to strengthening the fulfillment of the ARISE Agenda that is geared towards ensuring greater prosperity for our people".

He said contributions and inputs from the public hearing will give the budget the wholesomeness it supposed to have and noted that the indicates the Governor's unwavering commitment to the progressive intentions of the ARISE AGENDA

"Let me thank and welcome all of us to this Public Hearing, particularly our visitors from the MDAs, NGOs and other relevant stakeholders whose contributions and inputs will give the Budget the wholesomeness it is supposed to have".

"The 2025 budget estimate is christened: “BUDGET OF CONSOLIDATION AND EXPANSION”. This clearly indicates the Governor’s unwavering commitment to the progressive intentions of his ARISE Agenda".

Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Linus Nkan and his counterpart in the Ministry of Economic Development, Mr. Emem Bob and a representative of the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Uko Udom, (SAN) made presentations during the public hearing.

Other stakeholders including the Akwa Ibom State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Civil society groups, Policy Alert, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) among others submitted inputs during the public hearing.
