Gully Erosion: AKHA Urges Akwa Ibom State Government to Intervene in Gully Erosion At NASCO

Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging the state government to intervene in the gully erosion menace ravaging Northern Annang Secondary Commercial School, NASCO by providing lasting solution the problem.

This follows a motion raised by the member representing Etim Ekpo/Ika State Constituency, Rt. Hon Mfon Idung on the  "Urgent Action Against Gully Erosion Menace At Northern Annang Secondary Commercial School, NASCO, Etim Ekpo LGA, and its environs".

Presenting the motion during Tuesday's plenary, Idung said the level of the gully erosion was alarming and threatening the safety and well-being of staff and students.

"I am persuaded to bring forward this motion as a matter of urgency to salvage the environmental degradation and erosion menace at the only forefront Secondary School in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area, Northern Annang Secondary Commercial Secondary School, this particular gully erosion is an alarming environmental challenge that is progressively threatening the safety, infrastructure and over all well-being of indigenes, Staff and Students of the aforementioned institution".

Idung who said that the incessant rainfall has worsened the situation, stressed that the erosion menace has disrupted conducive learning environment.

"Due to incessant rainfall in the past few months, the situation has worsened and become worrisome, leading to potential hazards for both Staff and Students, as well as compromising the integrity of the School infrastructure.

"Concern that the erosion menace disrupts conducive learning environment, as Students, Staff and visitors find it difficult to access the
school compound causing distractions and negatively impacting academic performance, which if left unaddressed, the deteriorating condition of the school may adversely affect the School's age long reputation, thereby hindering enrollment of new Students"

He therefore urge the house to mandate relevant agencies to carryout on- the - spot- assessment and inspection to determine appropriate measures to be taken to salvage the precarious situation.

In his remarks, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon Udeme Otong, urge the House Committee on Works to carryout on the spot assessment of the site and report back to the house within two weeks.
