Lawmaker commend Udom over Ekim Power Station


-Pushes for stronger job protections for locals

The lawmaker representing Ibesikpo Asutan State Constituency in Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Uko has appealed to contractors handling projects in the state to employ people from their host communities in order to curb unemployment.

He made the appeal when he led members of his committee on Special Project Monitoring/Implementation and Aviation Development on oversight function to the new Power Station, Ekim, Mkpat Enin on Friday.

Elder Uko said his committee was there to see things for themselves and to ascertain whether the project was ready for commissioning by the Vice President, Professor Osinbajo.

"We are here as the representative of the people to see things for ourselves and also have something to tell the people of Akwa Ibom state before the commissioning"

While thanking the Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel for the initiative, said they were happy with what they saw on ground.

"What we have come to see as a committee, we guarantee that in 2021, there will be constant power supply in the state".

Elder Uko said he was pleased with the handlers of the project, who the MD of Ibom Power Plant, Engr. Mmenyene Etukukoh said they were Akwa Ibomites and Nigerians.

He said companies operating in the state should always consider giving employment to indigenes of their host communities in order to reduce unemployment among the youths.

He commended the management of the power station with a particular reference to Managing Director of Ibom Power Plant and SSA to the Governor on Power, Engr Mmenyene Etukukoh for the project seen on ground and charged him to use his wealth of experience and technical know how to establish a distribution company in Akwa Ibom state.

"We want to commend you because you are a compendium of power, you have power, you have distribution but what we want you to have now is the supply".
