UDOM ORDERS IMMEDIATE REMEDIAL MEASURES ON EROSION, FLOOD SITES

…as Environment Commissioner inspects sites, appeals for FG, Int’l Community interventions

Ubong Sampson - Uyo

Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State has ordered for remedial
measures on areas affected by flood and gully erosion, to give succor to victims and residents, pending the adoption of a solution plan to permanently end the menace.

The Governor’s order was made known by the newly appointed Commissioner for Environment and Petroleum Resources, Barr. Ekong Sampson, who disclosed this to newsmen while inspecting some areas within the capital city affected by erosion and flood.

He assured that the state's Chief Executive is one that is very passionate about the environment, as well as the wellbeing of his people. "That is why I am here to see things for myself, even under a heavy downpour like this because to me, it is better to inspect erosion and flood sites under the
rain, so that I can see how the situation is really like.

"In situations like this, the public should expect government intervention. Besides, having assumed office, I felt that I should have a firsthand knowledge about the state of affairs about our environment", he added.

Sampson reiterated concern and committed efforts on the part of the state government over the high level erosion disaster in the state, especially in the areas visited during the tour, while hinting that government is equally sensitizing the people on the need to take the issues of erosion and flood control very seriously, especially those handling construction jobs.

“We must ensure total compliance with the basic construction standards. Government advocacy has been on the increase that all members of the public should take the issue of protecting the environment very seriously, the issue should not be left to government alone.

He further appealed to the federal government for immediate
intervention, as according to him, “Akwa Ibom State is under threat”,
saying it should see the erosion and flood situations in Akwa Ibom as very peculiar and pressing, as the environment is under
pressure.

Also speaking during the inspection, the Managing Director of Nigerpet who was in the Commissioner's inspection team, Mr. Muyeed Wadud noted that his firm has been working closely with the state government to put the situation under
control.

The areas toured during the exercise were Uyo Prisons, Udo Inwang
Street ravine, Ubara Street in Use Offot and Etim Okon Usanga Street
ravine, all in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.
